Visual

Module 1 features an analog-style photo booth that visitors will recognize as a staple of shopping malls all over the world. The similarities end here, as the insides have been retrofit with a computer, micro-controller, custom electronics, lighting and digital imaging technology. But this is just a small part of the technology that is dedicated to the visual elements of the piece.

Hardware:

  • Photo booth
  • Macbook Pro
  • Arduino microcontroller
  • iSight webcam
  • LED RGB lighting
  • Kinect™ motion controller
  • 4.0 audio speaker system
  • Video projector & screen

Software:

  • Arduino code – photobooth lighting and webcam interface
  • Max/MSP/Jitter – computer vision, image capture, video synthesis
  • Python script – video decomposition & synthesis

Audio

Module 2 contains the audio component of the piece. Like the photobooth, a payphone booth is the central component at the heart of the audio portion of Inside.Out. But again, the familiar hardware masks the real technology at work: custom electronics, computers, sensors and multiple layers of software and code turn an ordinary phone into a networked multimedia communication device.

Hardware:

  • Phone booth and payphone
  • Macbook Pro
  • Arduino microcontroller
  • Proximity sensor
  • 4.0 audio speaker system

Software:

  • Arduino code – payphone and sensor interface
  • Max/MSP/Jitter – audio input/out and synthesis
  • Python script – voice recognition, speech-to-text and text-to-speech, chatbot interface

Networking

Module 3 represents the public and personal data socially shared and distributed throughout the information ‘cloud’.

Hardware:

  • Multiple networked computers
  • Router
  • Video projectors & screens

Software:

  • Max – Spatial audio and OpenGL video rendering.
  • Python – audiovisual processing, network management
